How to Help

There are plenty of ways to use your time and talents to help our furry friends in need!

  • Our General Volunteer Program allows those 16 years and older various ways to get involved and help out at the facility and in the community.
  • The Humane Teen Club is geared toward those between the ages of 12 and 16 years old.
  • The Foster Care Program gives individuals an opportunity to provide special care and shelter for a pet until he or she is ready for adoption.
  • You can also help from home! The GBHS is always in need of newspaper rolls and the items listed on our Wish List.

Monetary donations are always helpful to our cause, especially since the GBHS receives no city, state, federal or United Way funding.  We largely depend on the generosity the public and foundations to meet community needs, and have been operating on this same principal since we opened in 1883!

Here are some options on how to give to the GBHS today:

GBHS Auxiliary

Join a wonderful group of women who help support the GBHS in a big way. It all started with a small group of women in 1979, and has grown into a large group who hosts events like the Jazz Cat Ball! For more information, visit their web page.

Black Dog Club

Did you know that many wonderful dogs are overlooked at shelters across the nation every day simply because of the color of their fur? Black is the most common color of dog that you’ll find at any shelter. Most shelters find that black dogs, especially large ones, are often the most difficult to place into forever homes.

You can help change the life of a black shelter dog today. When you adopt a black dog from the GBHS, you will have the chance to become a member of the Black Dog Club!

We hold a multitude of events to benefit the animals and people we serve. Check out our community calendar to view our upcoming events!

Gift Shop

The pet gift shop located in our facility is open Mon-Sat 10:00am – 4:30pm and Sunday 12:00pm – 4:30pm. You can find everything you will need to accommodate your cat or dog!
